Barn Acoustics
It started ordinarily enough with a phone call. A potential customer was having a problem that they felt could be solved with a microphone. The customer it turned out was an Artificial Insemination Clinic for cows in the neighboring city of Langley, B.C, Canada.
The nature of the problem was that the instructor needed to stand at the back of the cow when he made the insertion. Human anatomy dictated that he faced away from the group of students who in order to watch the process had to stand behind the instructor. The very best the instructor could muster was a "head-turned-over-the-shoulder-backwards-shout" in an environment that could be quite noisy; and that's where we came in.
I thought this was the perfect application for the MIPRO MA-101 portable wireless audio system. Self-contained, battery powered, lightweight it had it all. I got in touch with our local representative Martin Topp who supplied me with a "demo unit" and I set off for the Barns. Our first trial involved the a traditional wireless lapel microphone; however either we had a larger than usual cow, or a short-armed instructor, but when he pressed his chest against the cow's rump our audio became extremely muffled.
And that's when I thought of the MIPRO MU-53HN wireless headworn microphone. This ultimately proved to be the best solution, as for no matter how deep the cow, the instructors head, and particularly the mouth always remained well clear of any obstructions. And so, clean crisp audio was achieved; just another typical day.
